4 Easy Paper Heart DIYs

If you are anything like me you love to decorate and change up your decor for every holiday and season. So I came up with some cute crafts to do that are super cheap! All I used for all of the crafts below was construction paper, string, mod podge, scissors, a hole puncher, and a heart shaped puncher. Since I like to craft from time to time, all I actually had to buy was the construction paper. These made for some fun, cute, and cheap decorations!

Here are four different paper heart crafts I made this weekend in order to decorate for Valentine's Day! These made for some fun, cute, and cheap decorations!

Heart Punched Paper Chain

For this paper chain you will need white, pink, and red construction paper as well as a heart puncher. Because I already had one, I used a 5/8″ heart puncher that I found in the scrapbooking section of my local craft store, but you can also buy one here.

I used two sheets of each color and cut them in about 1.25″ strips longways. I got about 7 strips from each piece of paper, so 14 of each color! My strips were definitely not all perfectly the same but they were close enough. 🙂

Then I went ahead and took my heart punch and started punching hearts in each strip. I did a test strip first and found out that if I left about a 1/4″ from the edge of the puncher and the last heart I could get 8 hearts on a strip and I liked the spacing.

Once I was finished punching out all 42 strips, I set the heart “confetti” aside (see next craft to see what I made with that) and started to create my paper chain!

I decided to place the links in a way where the hearts would face the opposite direction as the link two away from it. Now that sounds really complicated, but if you look at the picture below I can explain! The red link on the left side of the page the hearts face down, and the pink link (the link two away) the hearts face up! You can see that the white link and the far right red link also have the hearts facing different directions.

Heart Confetti Picture

After making the heart chain I had a ton of punched out hearts! So I decided to make a little sign out of them! In order to create this sign you will also need some mod podge and a sponge brush or paint brush (to spread the mod podge).  I started by taking an 11″x17″ piece of white construction paper and folding it in fours (see picture below).

I then chose the section second from the bottom and brushed on a thin layer mod podge about two inches in and started covering with the red and pink hearts.Remember to only mod podge about two inches at a time! It drys much faster than you think 🙂

Once you get all the way to the end you will have something like the picture above!I sealed all the pink and red hearts with a thin coat of mod podge and let that dry for about fifteen minutes. This was so cute I almost didn’t want to do anything else to it! However, I decided to stick to my original plan and write out ‘love’ with the remaining white hearts.

When that layer was dry I did another coat of mod podge about a quarter of the way in and placed down the L. Once I had those hearts placed I put another coat of mod podge over top to lock the L in place. I did the same thing for each of the other letters as well! Oh also, just for fun and the festivity of Valentine’s day, I made the O in the shape of a heart.

I let my sign dry for about an hour after that final coat of mod podge. Once dry, I folded the paper so that the bottom section and top section overlapped to make a triangle shape. I then stapled those edges together, and voila! A super cute and cheap sign 🙂

Interlocking Heart Sculpture

This was definitely the simplest of the crafts! I wanted to make something that could kind of stand on its own so I tried this out on a whim, and it worked! I just used 1 piece of each color and cut them into 5 strips, but I only ended up using 4 of each color. They were about 1.5″ wide.

I then proceeded to fold all of the strips into hearts! I folded each piece of paper in half, carefully tucked the ends inside the crease of the fold, and stapled to hold it all together.

Once I finished creating all of the hearts, I stapled them together alternating color and direction. I did two groups of four hearts and kind of just balanced them on top of each other to get this fun little arrow like sculpture. There are way more possibilities with this one to make more hearts and bigger structures, but this is just a simple starting point. 🙂

For this fun banner you will need one piece of red and pink construction paper, a hole puncher, scissors, and string.

I started off but cutting each piece of paper into eight parts. I then took four of each color, folded them in half, and cut out hearts. This left me with four plain, four cut outs, and four hearts of each color!

I then went ahead and glued the hearts to the papers of the opposite color. Once the glue dried, I punched holes in the top corners of all the papers. I then placed them on a piece of white yarn, and had a super cute banner!
